Positive reinforcement occurs when something that an individual wants is presented to that individual in an effort to increase a behavior .
Negative reinforcement, on the other hand occurs when a certain stimulus (usually an aversive stimulus) is removed after a particular behavior is exhibited. These are part of operant conditioning.
