Set it up as proportion.  Corresponding sides matter.  I am going to go from the one on the left to the one on the right.  [tex] \frac{16}{12}= \frac{x-1}{6} [/tex].  Cross multiply to get 96=12x-12.  108 = 12x and x = 9
