To calculate percent by mass, you need to determine two things: the mass of just the element, and the molar mass of the whole compound. We calculate as follows:

Mass percent = (mass of solute / mass of the solution) 100%

Mass percent = [3.40 / (3.40 + 58.75)] x 100 = 1.70%
