What made Constantinople a good location for a new city?

Location of Constantinopole (now Istanbul) was chosen this way, because it was surrounded almost entirely by water, which made it and excellent harbor and it helped to defend the city. What is more, it had a very good access to the important rivers of Euphrat and Danube.
