Change mixed numbers to improper fractions: 9/4 + (-7/5).  Adding a negative is the same as subtraction: 9/4-7/5.  Find a common denominator (20) and change both fractions to have to common denominator 45/20-28/20.  Then subtract numerators = 17/20.  Reduce if possible, which is not in this problem.
