Akbar was the king who was best known for defending religious freedom.His policy of Sulah -i kul which meant peace for all was inspired by Sufi principles. Akbar ruled large parts of India and the population of the realm was also diverse. It was necessary to maintain the policy of tolerance and respect of other religions as the rulers were Muslims and the majority of population Hindu. He propounded a syncretic religion called Din-i-Ilahi.
